Failure Is An Option

Are you a perfectionist?

All Or Nothing Thinking

Perfectionists, like high achievers, tend to set high goals and work hard toward them. However, a high achiever can be satisfied with doing a great job and achieving excellence (or something close), even if their very high goals aren’t completely met. Perfectionists will accept nothing less than perfection. "Almost perfect" is seen as failure.

Highly Critical

Perfectionists are more critical of themselves and others than high achievers. While high achievers take pride in their accomplishments and tend to be supportive of others, perfectionists tend to spot mistakes and imperfections. They home in on imperfections and have trouble seeing anything else. They’re more judgmental and harder on themselves and on others when "failure" does occur.

Pushed By Fear

High achievers tend to be pulled toward their goals and by a desire to achieve them. They are happy with any steps made in the right direction. Perfectionists, on the other hand, tend to be pushed toward their goals by a fear of not reaching them and see anything less than a perfectly met goal as a failure.

Unrealistic Standards

Unfortunately, a perfectionist’s goals aren’t always even reasonable. While high achievers can set their goals high, perhaps enjoying the fun of going a little further once goals are reached, perfectionists often set their initial goals out of reach.

Focused on ResultsHigh achievers can enjoy the process of chasing a goal as much or more than the actual reaching of the goal itself. Conversely, perfectionists see the goal and nothing else. They’re so concerned about meeting the goal and avoiding the dreaded failure that they can’t enjoy the process of growing and striving.Depressed by Unmet GoalsPerfectionists are much less happy and easygoing than high achievers. While high achievers are able to bounce back fairly easily from disappointment, perfectionists tend to beat themselves up much more and wallow in negative feelings when their high expectations go unmet.Fear of FailurePerfectionists are also much more afraid to fail than are high achievers. Because they place so much stock in results and become so disappointed by anything less than perfection, failure becomes a very scary prospect. And, since anything less than perfection is seen as failure, perfectionists sometimes put off things until the last minute.Procrastination

It seems paradoxical that perfectionists would be prone to procrastination, as that trait can be detrimental to productivity, but perfectionism and procrastination do tend to go hand in hand. This is because, fearing failure as they do, perfectionists will sometimes worry so much about doing something imperfectly that they become immobilized and fail to do anything at all.

Defensiveness

Because a less-than-perfect performance is so painful and scary to perfectionists, they tend to take constructive criticism defensively, while high achievers can see criticism as valuable information to help their future performance.

Low Self-Esteem

High achievers tend to have equally high esteem; not so with perfectionists. Perfectionists tend to be very self-critical and unhappy and suffer from low self-esteem. They can also be lonely or isolated as their critical nature and rigidity can push others away as well. This can lead to lower self-esteem.

Strategies to deal with Perfectionism

  • set realistic, attainable goals
  • break up overwhelming tasks into small steps
  • focus on one activity or task at a time
  • acknowledge that everyone makes mistakes
  • recognize that most mistakes present learning opportunities
  • confront fears of failure by remaining realistic about possible outcomes
    • What is the worst that could happen?

Change your thinking, change your life!

Failure Is An Option

Famous quote by NASA’s flight director Gene Krantz during the Apollo 13 space mission. “Failure is not an option.”

But what if failure is an option?

Famous Failures

Jon Benjamin wrote a book in 2018

“It’s an assertion that failure is an option and even, at times, a viable prescription for a better life, despite its long-standing stigmatization. Failure can be incredibly freeing and an end in itself, not just that tired platitude that it is a necessary step on the road to success.”

Many people suffer from perfectionism.

“Refusal to accept any standard short of perfection”.

Which is silly to say the least

This Time, It Can Be Different

I just built a time machine!

Excuse me while I geek out for a moment. In the film Star Trek Generations, Captains Kirk and Picard are caught up in an energy field which allows them to go back to any time in the past or future. Kirk states “I can start all over again—do things right from day one.”

Our experiences and failures have written a script. This script plays out in our subconscious minds over and over again.

I loved baseball when I was a kid. I grew up watching it with my dad and eventually played little league. To say I was terrible is an understatement. I could not hit well and was average at best defensively. Even now, I can recall my mindset at the time. I would be anxious and nervous prior to every game because my assumption was the same every game. My assumption was I was going to strike out often and that I would miss any ball that was hit to me in the field. I distinctly remember standing in right field (where the awful players usually end up) and saying over and over to myself “Please don’t hit it to me. Please don’t hit it to me.”

Move forward to high school. I still loved the game and persisted. There was a difference though. I stopped playing the old script and focused on a new one. The new script excluded my past failures and focused on what I could do in the present. While I never came close to hitting .300 (which is a great average in baseball), I was able to improve and had an average around .240. I also improved dramatically in my defense and wanted the ball to be hit to me. I earned my Varsity letter during my sophomore year.

I flipped the script and wrote a new one. I was vastly improved and really enjoyed playing the game I loved.

Speaking of baseball, let’s play a game. Don’t worry, you won’t need a bat or a ball. You will just need something to drink.

You are probably familiar with the drinking game “Never Have I Ever”. The rules of the game are simple. Someone makes a statement. For example, “Never have I ever punched someone in the face.”. I know. That’s not a very nice thing to talk about, let alone do. If you have done the thing mentioned, you must take a drink,

If you have your drink ready, let’s play.

Never Have I Ever doubted my own abilities. Raises my glass and drinks.

Never Have I Ever avoided starting something because I felt unqualified to do it. Raises my glass and drinks.

Never Have I Ever purchased an online course or product, thinking that I would follow through because of the financial investment, and didn’t. Raises my glass and drinks.

Never Have I Ever dreamed about doing something and never taken action to make it happen. Raises my glass and drinks.

Never Have I Ever been told by other people that I have abilities and skills and internally scoffed at their statement. Raises my glass and drinks.

Never Have I Ever thought about making money doing something I love without pursuing that thought. Raises my glass and drinks.

Never Have I Ever viewed myself as inferior to others or lacking confidence to start something new. Raises my glass and drinks.

Never Have I Ever experienced Imposter Syndrome. Imposter Syndrome is defined as doubting your abilities and feeling like a fraud. Raises my glass and drinks.

Never Have I Ever worked on a project or task and said to my self “This time will be different” and it ended exactly as it always has. Raises my glass and drinks.

It may come as a surprise to you, my readers, but we have all been there. We have all had or have self-doubts and lack of confidence. In fact, we will always have areas that we feel ill-equipped to handle. God forbid someone asks me to perform brain surgery tomorrow. An extreme example to be sure, but there are many more things that I would not be able to do successfully compared to the things I am competent in. The key is identifying where our strengths lie and to expand and perfect those areas.

Why do you do the same things over and over again when it does not lead to success? There are many answers to this. The most basic and simple answer is that you don’t know any other way. You have learned to function based on your experiences and history.

Self Hypnosis Techniques

1. Autosuggestion

a. Emile Coue’; French pharmacist 1857-1926. He is famous for coining the term “Every day in every way, I’m getting better and better.”

b. He also states “I have never cured anyone in my life. All I do is show people how they can cure themselves.”

c. The Coué method centers on a routine repetition of this particular expression according to a specified ritual, in a given physical state, and in the absence of any sort of allied mental imagery, at the beginning and at the end of each day.

d. Coué thus developed a method which relied on the belief that any idea exclusively occupying the mind turns into reality,[

e. Affirmations and repetitive mantras.

2. Autogenic

a. Developed by German psychiatrist Joannes Heinrich Shultz.

b. A desensitization-relaxation technique

c. Autogenic training is based on 3 main principles:[5]

· Reduction of afferent stimulation (both exteroceptive and proprioceptive)

· Mental repetition of verbal formulae

· Passive concentration

d. My hands are warm and heavy.

e. After completing the exercise, ask yourself “Did I notice any change?”

f. Can be very effective for pain relief

3. Progressive Muscle Relaxation

4. Image Streaming (creativity)

a. When you read a novel, for instance, wouldn’t you want to immerse yourself into the story –as if you’re part of it? Like translating a one-dimensional universe into palpable landscapes and lifelike characters?

b. Image streaming is an exercise where you observe your mental images and movies. While you explore the movies of your mind, you describe them out loud in maximum detail.

c. Image streaming helps you to empower your visualisation skills while it improves your verbal fluency, and enables you to access your subconscious mind for problem-solving.

5. Mindfulness

a. Living in the present

b. Mindfulness is the practice of purposely bringing one's attention in the present moment without judgment, a skill one develops through meditation or other training. Mindfulness derives from sati, a significant element of Buddhist traditions, and based on Zen,

c. Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us. Whenever you bring awareness to what you’re directly experiencing via your senses, or to your state of mind via your thoughts and emotions, you’re being mindful. And there’s growing research showing that when you train your brain to be mindful, you’re actually remodeling the physical structure of your brain.

Volunteering and its Surprising BenefitsVolunteering can help you make friends, learn new skills, advance your career, and even feel happier and healthier. Learn how to find the right volunteer opportunity for you.

Why volunteer?

1. Volunteering connects you to others.

2. Volunteering is good for your mind and body.

3. Volunteering can advance your career.

4. Volunteering brings fun and fulfillment to your life.

Benefit 1: Volunteering connects you to othersBenefit 2: Volunteering is good for your mind and bodyBenefit 3: Volunteering can advance your careerBenefit 4: Volunteering brings fun and fulfillment to your life How to find the right volunteer opportunity

· Would you like to work with adults, children, animals, or remotely from home?

· Do you prefer to work alone or as part of a team?

· Are you better behind the scenes or do you prefer to take a more visible role?

· How much time are you willing to commit?

· What skills can you bring to a volunteer job?

· What causes are important to you?

Where to find volunteer opportunities

· Community theaters, museums, and monuments.

· Libraries or senior centers.

· Service organizations such as Lions Clubs or Rotary Clubs.

· Local animal shelters, rescue organizations, or wildlife centers.

· Youth organizations, sports teams, and after-school programs.

· Historical restorations, national parks, and conservation organizations.

· Places of worship such as churches or synagogues.

· Online directories and other resources (see below).

Getting the most out of volunteering

You’re donating your valuable time, so it’s important that you enjoy and benefit from your volunteering. To make sure that your volunteer position is a good fit:

Ask questions. You want to make sure that the experience is right for your skills, your goals, and the time you want to spend. Sample questions for your volunteer coordinator might address your time commitment, if there’s any training involved, who you will be working with, and what to do if you have questions during your experience.

Make sure you know what’s expected. You should be comfortable with the organization and understand the time commitment. Consider starting small so that you don’t over commit yourself at first. Give yourself some flexibility to change your focus if needed.

Don’t be afraid to make a change. Don’t force yourself into a bad fit or feel compelled to stick with a volunteer role you dislike. Talk to the organization about changing your focus or look for a different organization that’s a better fit.

If volunteering overseas, choose carefully. Some volunteer programs abroad can cause more harm than good if they take much-needed paying jobs away from local workers. Look for volunteer opportunities with reputable organizations.

Enjoy yourself. The best volunteer experiences benefit both the volunteer and the organization. If you’re not enjoying yourself, ask yourself why. Is it the tasks you’re performing? The people you’re working with? Or are you uncomfortable simply because the situation is new and unfamiliar? Pinpointing what’s bothering you can help you decide how to proceed.

It can be difficult to build good habits.

That’s especially true if you want to stick with them for the long-term. Thankfully, there are a few simple strategies that you can use to build good habits and break bad ones.

1. Start with a habit that is so easy you can't say no.2. Take some time to understand exactly what is holding you back.3. Develop a plan for when you fail.

Here are three strategies that might help…

1. Set schedules rather than a deadlines.

2. Forget about performance and focus on building a new identity.

3. Make this your new motto: “Never miss twice.”

Slipping up on your habits doesn't make you a failure. It makes you normal. What separates top performers from everyone else is that they get back on track quickly. Make sure you have a plan for when you fail.

Anger Management

Understanding anger

Effects of anger

· Physical health.

· Mental health.

· Career.

· Relationships.

Myths and facts about anger

Myth: I shouldn’t “hold in” my anger. It’s healthy to vent and let it out.

Fact: While it’s true that suppressing and ignoring anger is unhealthy, venting is no better. Anger is not something you have to “let out” in an aggressive way in order to avoid blowing up. In fact, outbursts and tirades only fuel the fire and reinforce your anger problem.

Myth: Anger, aggression, and intimidation help me earn respect and get what I want.

Fact: Respect doesn’t come from bullying others. People may be afraid of you, but they won’t respect you if you can’t control yourself or handle opposing viewpoints. Others will be more willing to listen to you and accommodate your needs if you communicate in a respectful way.

Myth: I can’t help myself. Anger isn’t something you can control.

Fact: You can’t always control the situation you’re in or how it makes you feel, but you can control how you express your anger. And you can communicate your feelings without being verbally or physically abusive. Even if someone is pushing your buttons, you always have a choice about how to respond.
